CODE OF ETHICS BREEDERS

The Maremma Sheepdog Club of America aspires to protect the development of Maremma Sheepdogs by encouraging breeders to adopt the Code of Ethics to promote and foster the highest standards among breeders who are concerned with the propagation of physically, mentally and temperamentally sound Maremma Sheepdogs of proper breed type, and to encourage cooperation in the improvement, advancement, and protection of our breed.
Code of Ethics Breeders accept responsibility for the protection, well-being and improvement of the breed and agree to the following:
  • CoE Breeders educate themselves about the Maremma Sheepdog, its history, temperament, needs and health issues.
  • CoE Breeders breed only those Maremma Sheepdogs which have no radical departure from the official breed standard as accepted by MSCA, including temperament flaws.
  • CoE Breeders breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed as livestock guardians.
  • CoE Breeders breed only those dogs who have received either OFA hip certification as being clear of hip dysplasia, or PennHIP DI scores of less than 0.51, and will record all tests openly with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
  • CoE Breeders breed discriminately and only upon strong evidence of the possibility of finding suitable homes for the resulting puppies.
  • CoE Breeders breed only physically and mentally mature dogs of appropriate breeding age, and refrain from breeding any dog or bitch that consistently produces progeny with serious faults or hereditary health issues.
  • CoE Breeders are available to buyers for advice they may need for the life of the dog and educate prospective owners of the advantages, disadvantages & responsibilities of owning a Maremma Sheepdog.
  • CoE Breeders take responsibility for all offspring produced in their breeding program and will assist in their lifetime placements and re-homing if necessary, and will assume responsibility for any dog of their breeding if the owner must relinquish their dog, or for any dog of their breeding which comes into the possession of a rescue network or shelter.
The MSCA is not liable for individual breeders adherence to the MSCA Code of Ethics. It is the responsibility of any potential buyers to ask pertinent questions of the breeder to discern their responsibility as breeders, especially as it relates to OFA and/or PennHip certifications and ratings.
To become a MSCA Code of Ethics Breeder, you must print, sign and submit to the MSCA the MSCA Code of Ethics Form (linked below) ALONG WITH the hip certifications of your breeding dogs (copies of certifications - OFA HIP CERTIFICATE/PennHIP CERTIFICATE and/or the link to the dog's individual OFA page).

Bailey Bluffs Ranch is a club lamb and Dorper sheep ranch, nestled in the Callahan Mountains of the Umpqua Valley.  We made the decision to add Maremma Sheepdogs after a devastating  loss of lambs from coyote predators. Our dogs offer protection to our sheep and give our family a much greater sense of security. We strive to produce healthy, well rounded, working dogs.

We at Alpacas of Wildcat Hollow raise alpacas and their guardians, Maremmas. The breeding guardians are carefully chosen. The sire and dam are working dogs and both are evaluated to make sure the temperament, conformation and guardian instinct are strong. Our breeding guardians are OFA or PennHIP tested and exhibit high scores before they join our breeding program. We also expose guardian puppies to chickens as well. We have a late 2017 litter available, please see our website for information.

Retiring from 30 years in the military, I knew I wanted a self-sufficient family farm. Sky Island Farm is an organic permaculture farm in the Santa Ana Mountains of Southern California, centered between San Diego and LA, the beach and SoCal wine country. My Maremmas guard chickens, turkeys, sheep, a cow and horse and bee colonies from many predators including coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, hawks, eagles, skunks and raccoons. I breed for superb guardian instinct, strong conformation and wonderful temperament, capable of handling guardian duties as well as just being an overall wonderful family dog.

My foundation dam and sire, Alaska and Apollo, both have OFA excellent hips, and I am committed to improving the overall health of the breed with our careful breeding selection practices. My breeding program continues to produce puppies with OFA Excellent hips and Good Elbows. In 2018, I imported Finnish Champion and working guardian Abba, bred to Italian-bred Finnish Champion Evo, both with Excellent Hips as well, and their 8 puppies have added a whole new fresh line of genetics to the Sky Island Farm and the Maremma community at large. As my first Foundation generation has aged, though they remain capable guardians, I have worked to expand the genetics even further with cooperative breeding with other Code of Ethics breeders and now have a broad base of genetics among my breeding dogs.
Since early 2020, demand for LGD puppies has increased exponentially, as those with a dream of a family homestead made it come true when they found they could work remotely and live anywhere. I have found mentoring new homesteaders and farmers with their new LGD extremely satisfying and I am committed to continuing that mentorship work.

While I primarily sell working puppies to farms where they will guard, I also recognize that there are many companion and pet Maremmas out there, and I am committed to mentorship for them as well, realizing that those not ready for the size of a grown Maremma or the “teenager” phase, may need some guidance to help them have the best relationship with their dogs.
I welcome visitors to the farm to meet my Maremmas and learn out they work and guard and see my training practices.  Phone: 951-294-4619

On the 2J 2K Ranch we are raising quality registered Maremma Sheepdogs on 20 rolling acres in the ruggedly beautiful Missouri Ozarks. You will find our Maremmas contentedly guarding chickens, sheep, cattle, horses, and guinea fowl. We love the Maremma because they are a loyal livestock guardian dog who make their presence known with predators, all the while possessing a friendly temperament with people, dogs, and cats. Striving to preserve the breed, we take pedigree genetics and hip testing seriously by selecting for health, working ability, temperament, and conformation. The Maremmas residing on our farm have excellent bloodlines and their hips have been X-rayed, evaluated, and scored with PennHIP.  When carefully choosing our Maremma's we traveled extensively, to bring home LGD’s from proven working parents. Our Maremma's have reputable foundational lines from many respected breeders and proven working dogs. Our male's Dam is a direct Italian import (by a fellow breeder who traveled to Italy) adding new and diverse bloodlines to the Maremma’s in the states.  2J 2K Maremma puppies have a pedigree with a low inbreeding coefficient. This is a key aspect in preserving the Maremma Sheepdog’s future vitality.

Come visit the farm or we will help arrange the delivery of your new Maremma puppy, via flight nanny, airline approved kennel, or personal delivery. Contact us for an application and let us know what you’re looking for in a livestock guardian dog and the type of home you will provide. Like us on Facebook: 2j2kbordercollies.com/maremmasheepdogs

Brockhaven Farm is a beautiful farm nestled at the very base of the Willapa Hills in SW Washington.  Our Maremma sheepdogs valiantly guard our top quality registered Icelandic sheep amid a high predator area and they keep them safe.  I have premium dogs. They are very healthy, and even my aging dogs show no concerning health issues. I breed for overall excellence, both with my sheep and with my Maremma sheepdogs. With my Maremma's I breed for a great temperament, wonderful working ability and beauty, in that order of priority. Currently, I do have 8 bouncing boys available to loving, working, forever homes. Like their dam and sire, they all have amazing temperaments and are gorgeous and show every sign of becoming great working dogs. I take great pride in my care of every puppy I raise. They are given high quality food, including goat's milk, quality vet care, they are socialized with our family and our livestock and are given rudimentary training. I put a great deal of effort into my puppies because I want them to reach their potential and this is the most important foundational time to set this in place. My puppies are always treated with love and care and I look for homes that will give them the quality care that they deserve, and in return, they will get the dog of a lifetime.  I occasionally have a litter, so please contact me by phone if you would like to be put on a list.  I am always happy to answer questions and when you get a puppy from me, you will always have me available for guidance and direction.

We are a small family-run farm in central Virginia. Our dogs are socialized with goats and alpacas along with typical rural sounds of gunfire, traffic, and small children squealing with glee. We plan to have the puppies also exposed to free range poultry and waterfowl. Having worked with several LGD breeds the Maremma is our absolute favorite. We strive to improve the breed and produce healthy, quality puppies who will grow into strong livestock guardians. Our animals are considered family and we do everything to make sure that they have happy and long lives.

At Maremma Sheepdogs of West Sumner, we are passionate about the breed, and their incredible ability to work with their human counterparts as stewards of the farm. Our dogs are raised in rotational pasture, orchard and woodland grazing situations protecting our flock of Icelandic Sheep and laying ducks. We value diversity, both on farm, and in the natural landscape; and believe that Maremmas fill an important roll in defending the safety of livestock without disrupting the ecosystem around the farm.

Corey and Katie started their farm in Maine with the help of Alba and Umbra, Maremmas they raised and worked with while working as Sustainable Farm Management Intens in Italy. In addition to their farm, Corey is a certified Maine Master Naturalist, farm to table chef and co-coordinator of Community Food Matters, the local food council; Katie holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development and works as a Project Manager at the Cooperative Development Institute, supporting the development of cooperative businesses and networks throughout the northeast.

Terra Vitae Farms is a medium size farm that focuses on regenerative agriculture and the raising of livestock with the purpose of creating the best food possible while leaving the land in better condition than when we started. We have about 80 acres on which we raise Dexter cattle, meishan pork, kiko/savanna cross goats, katahdin sheep , meat birds, and  kids- the human kind. We are located on the Illinois Wisconsin border, 70 miles  northwest of Chicago Ilinios.
We added the beautiful Maremma Sheepdog 5 years ago to our farm  as a way to protect our livestock / poultry from natural predators, while still respecting the natural ecosystem that lives around our farm.
It was the best decision we could have made. Over the years we have tried to learn as much as we can about thecare and the amazing  work ethic of these dogs, and to gain a better understanding of what we have wanted in our own dogs and what we would want to pass on to others. We are breeding maremmas now with temperament , work ethic and health as our top priorities, while ensuring breed standards are respected and integrated into our dogs.  Our breeding dogs are penn hip and vet checked and pups are given the best possible chance for success at their jobs by being  raised amongst sheep , goats and and poultry from an early age, along with  and receiving  lots of human interaction with people of all ages  to facilitate the co- partnership of role of protector of our farms.

We are raising Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheep dogs, as well as sheep, rabbits, a few cows and pigs. We are very happy with the way our Maremmas love and guard the sheep. We have not lost a sheep to predation, despite the multitude of coyotes and the odd cougar and bear in the area. We have two Maremma females from RLT farms here in Alberta as well as a male and unrelated female from Petra Frondelius in Finnland. Our Finnish imports are Diamond, and Star (whom we call Duke). Both the dam and sire of Diamond are Finnish champions. The dam of Duke is a Finnish champion, but his sire Evo is not. We are located in the heart of Saskatchewan Canada, close to the village of Annaheim. We have a number of animals on our acreage that include goats, sheep, horses, cows, chickens, rabbits, and cats.
In 2016 our search for a Maremma LGD led us to RLT Farms in Spirit River Alberta and we purchased our first two Maremmas, Sheena and Lexi. RLT farms imported both their sir and Dam to Canada from Italy.
In the spring of 2017, we decided to add a breeding male and that search led us to Peavine Hollow Farms in Virginia, U.S. and we had Nicoloè imported to Canada. He is a fourth Generation male from their breeding program and one of their last as they have retired.

We have retained a female pup from Sheena's and Lexi's first litters for future breeding females and we are in the process of importing a second breeding male from Moonacre Maremmas in Arizona.
Our pups are born and raised in the pasture with the livestock and their early developmental training is done by their Dam and Sire. While they are here with us we try to give them exposure to all the livestock.
We currently have one spring litter available for sale. They were born on April,11th 2019. Dam: Lexi, (Lexi Anna Starling) Sire: Nicolo, (Peavine Hollows Nicolo Thunder). Five males and One female are still available for sale.
We hope to have a fall litter from Sheena, (Sheena Maria Chevalier) and Nicolo, (Peavine Hollows Nicolo Thunder) as well.

Both Willow and Wolfgang have sweet, loving, loyal personalities and when in the pastures, they are protective against predators, suspicious of strangers and constantly using their incredible senses to identify threats.
